Soft Pretzels

(photo from SK)
I love soft pretzels. I remember a lady I worked with in PA bringing in fresh pretzels from this downtown joint every Wednesday. What a wonderful thing to look forward to. Philly pretzels are soooo good. I had never considered before that I could make my own soft pretzels. I don't know why - I just hadn't. And then I got the latest update from Smitten Kitchen - and voila - an idea was born. By Friday evening, pretzels were made. By Saturday morning, pretzels were gone. Not only were they yummy, but Liza had a great time making them with me. The rolling and the shaping - all that - totally fun. No pictures from me, because Smitten Kitchen has wonderful photography - why duplicate?

By the way, you'll see that one option she proposes is mini-pretzels. I didn't make mine miniature - they weren't too big anyway. Plus, then I only had to make 16.

Oh -and the other suggestion is to use parchment paper. DO IT. Putting the pretzels straight on your baking pan (even sprayed with PAM), leaves impossible-to-get-rid-of-marks. If only the outline of a pretzel didn't remind me of something else that's shaped very similar - one that isn't nearly as tasty. I just kept scrubbing.
